Box 11

Every person in the course of his life is thinking about who he is and who he could be, why some reach the desired position, and others – not, about the circumstances, some of which help in this, and others interfere. And each person based on his profession, his views on life, the specifics of his cultural environment, psychological peculiarities on this question will answer in his own way.

I want to start from the moment of my birth and outline status positions that are conditioned by objective circumstances, that is, prescribed statuses. I was born in a small town in Ukraine, and this fact undoubtedly plays an important role in the nature of my future socialization. By nationality, I am Ukrainian, but this prescriptive status in my life has never played a role. Another prescriptive status – the status of a male is still not very much contributing to the achievement of certain goals.  My family at the time of my birth was complete, and consisted of my mother and father. The status of age has become influential since I was given to school in incomplete six years. If at the time of studying in high school this fact had a negative color for me because of certain harassment and sanctions against the “youngest” in my class, now, while studying at the college.

My family, that is, in sociological terms, is a primary group, besides its main functions of socialization, has a great influence on me in implying behavioral patterns. This is especially true in terms of achieving their goals and career growth – my father has always worked hard. Even today he works at the factory in Europe.

I haven’t thought about having any privileges before I came to the USA. There are so many people who represent different classes, and social groups that I feel of having some privileges. I am very lucky to live in Manhattan with my family member. It saves me time a lot of time to get to the college. Being a student in The City College, I think, is my biggest privilege.
